Network Rail awarded a £6.7m contract to Morgan Est in September 2005, to construct a new maintenance building at First ScotRail's Haymarket Depot. Work was completed in February 2007 and the Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, formally opened the new facilities on the 14th of that month.
The new building covers three tracks and accommodates three-car Class 170 Turbostar trains.
One section of the building has a high roof as it contains jacks that allow a full three-car set to be lifted, making jobs such a removing engines easier.
New overhead gantries allow up to four people access to the air conditioning equipment in the roofs of trains. In the old buildings access to roof-mounted equipment was only possible with temporary scaffolding.
Throughout the new building there is 'piped-in' power, oil and lubricants meaning an end to dragging cables around and the need to wheel bowsers about.
Follow-on work includes upgrading the oil storage area.
